Surface Mini Was Real, and 'It Was Awesome', Says Microsoft

Before Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 3, the tablet that would later push the company's tumbling devices revenue closer towards the green zone, Microsoft was also working on the Surface Mini. The device was rumoured to be launched alongside the Pro 3, but the company at the last moment decided against it. It is finally publicly confirming that there was a Surface Mini.

In an interview with Wired, Panos Panay, Microsoft's Corporate VP revealed the existence of the Surface Mini, which would have been the smallest tablet in the company's Surface lineup with a 7-inch display. "It was awesome," said Panay, who noted that he used to keep the tablet at his bedside, using it to jot down quick notes at night.

Rumour had it that the device was powered by a Qualcomm SoC paired with 1GB of RAM, and ran Windows RT 8.1. It was also pegged to have a USB port, and rocked a microSD slot. A Surface Pro 3 user manual had accidentally mentioned its miniature sibling a month after its release.

It was rumoured that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop cancelled the Surface Mini moments before the launch. It was understandable why the company didn't decide to unveil the Surface Mini - the Surface lineup wasn't very successful back in the day. But things have changed dramatically over the last one year.

The Surface Pro 3 has been praised by both users and experts alike. The Surface Pro 4, which was launched earlier this month, offers substantial improvement over its predecessor. So, perhaps the company may decide to launch a smaller Surface tablet in the coming month. Panay wouldn't say.

No word on what Microsoft did with all the Surface Mini inventory.

Samsung Galaxy View Tablet With 18.6-inch Full-HD Display Launched

Samsung Galaxy View, the large-screen tablet teased by the tech giant last month during IFA 2015, has finally been launched. Being touted as the "largest Android mobile device on the market," Samsung Galaxy View's pricing and availability have not been revealed yet. The 4G LTE-enabled device has been made with a video-centric interface in mind, says Samsung.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop-based Galaxy View features an 18.6-inch TFT LCD full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) resolution display, which is supported by a built-in 2-way kickstand. The kickstand doubles up as a handle as well to make it easy for users to carry the large tablet around. It is powered by an octa-core 1.6GHz processor (unspecified), clubbed with 2GB RAM.

For the audio, the Galaxy View sports dual 4-watt speakers. The tablet, which comes in 32GB and 64GB inbuilt storage variants, supports microSD card as well. Samsung says the tablet's 5700mAh battery can deliver up to 8 hours of video playback time. A front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera sits on top of the display. Measuring 451.8x275.8x11.9mm, the Samsung Galaxy View weighs 2.65 kgs. Besides 4G LTE (via Nano-SIM card), it features Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and USB connectivity. Samsung's Side-Sync feature is also supported.

As per The Verge, the tablet has a custom home screen featuring entertainment apps such as Netflix, Hulu, AOL, HBO Go, and YouTube. Swiping on to the next screen would show users the usual Android home screen with folders and apps. The top left section of the custom home screen shows up apps from cable providers including Comcast, DirectTV and Time Warner Cable. The company has promised it would update the apps on the home screen regularly. Users can then download Amazon video, Sling and others to put them on a different home screen.

"At Samsung, we are committed to creating new possibilities and bringing our consumers the best mobile experience," said JK Shin, CEO and Head of Samsung's IT & Mobile Business. "We are very excited to introduce the new Galaxy View, providing an entirely new way of consuming mobile video and entertainment."

Although the price has not been revealed officially, the tablet was briefly listed on an e-commerce US website Adorama, priced at $599 for 32GB Wi-Fi only model. Spotted by GSMArena, the listing also reveals the Galaxy View to run video-centric Media UX skin on top of Android.
